Gay radio station Gaydio, home to presenters such as Adam Turner and Phil Marriot, could be available across the UK on national digital radio if a bid by Listen2Digital to launch a suite of 18 new digital radio stations is successful.
Listen2Digital is one of two bidders for a large chunk of the digital radio spectrum. The other bidder is SoundDigital, a consortium of UTV and Bauer Media. They are behind radio stations such as TalkSport and Kiss FM.
SoundDigital plan to launch stations such as (the surprisingly good) Heat Radio and Kisstory nationwide, as well as bringing back Virgin Radio to the UK.
The decision on the winning bidder falls in the hands of OFCOM, the UK media regulator. OFCOM expects to announce its decision by the summer of this year. Services should launch in summer 2016. OFCOM is expected to shortly announce a consultation to invite interested parties to comment on the bids.
Gaydio is currently available on DAB Digital Radio in London and the South East as well as online and 88.4FM in Greater Manchester.
Update March 2015: OFCOM has announced its decision and accorded the licence to Sound Digital. So it’s not to be (for now at least).
