The Nickel Spa New York, which is nestled between The West Village and Chelsea on Eighth Avenue in New York, has just issued a rather terse statement (also posted on Facebook) that, following the acquisition of the Nickel brand by L’Oreal, its spa is to close at the end of the year.
It’s sad to see another Chelsea institution in New York close and this will only result in an even further decline of Chelsea as a gay neighbourhood.
The spa, which occupied two storeys of a former bank, was attractive on both the outside and inside and popular with both locals and visitors alike. Spas that provide a masculine environment exclusively for men are something of a rare breed.
We have nothing but praise for the staff, past and present, and we wish them well.
Nickel does of course also have a spa in London on Shorts Gardens in Covent Garden and this is unaffected.
Dear Nickel Men,
We have been informed that the Nickel brand and trademarks are being taken over by L’Oreal. As a result, we are required to shut down our spa operation by December 31, 2013.
I speak for each of member of the Nickel team when I say it has been our honor to serve you and we are grateful and appreciative for your love and support over the past 12 years.
We hope we get to thank you for your loyalty in person. Please come and help us go out with a bang by booking your last appointment before December 31st.
